A new year, a fresh start

After two tough years, we are looking at a brighter future. As everyone knows, Brazil (like many other countries) has suffered enormously from corona. Also “our” families have had a very hard time: no public transport to get to work, no job, no salary, extra mouths to feed at home, children who did not get any food, because the schools were closed and so on. With your help, we were able to do a lot for the children and their families! And that is why we now dare to look into this new year with fresh eyes.

Our partner ASAS organised a holiday camp or “colonia de ferias” for the children who wanted (or needed) it. A great way to get the children out of their home environment and keep them busy. The children loved seeing each other again and being able to do different activities. Hockey, tag, playing with paint and spraying each other with water… it was a party! Finally, they got their freedom back a little.

ASAS is open again!

Finally, ASAS can open again. The regular activities started again last Monday, 6 February. So far, 62 children have been registered: 16 adolescents and 15 children come in the morning and 16 adolescents and 15 children come in the afternoon.

There is already a waiting list, but due to the lack of space, we have to wait until the construction of our new building is finished (see further on in this newsletter). In any case, the ASAS team has again set to work professionally and energetically to guide the children as well as possible.

Construction is progressing!

Finally, finally, the construction is getting underway. After a lot of fuss with the local residents, largely caused by a misunderstanding in the communication, things are starting to look up.

Just look at the pictures below, the building process is progressing steadily.

If we have no more setbacks, the construction should be finished in June. We will then be able to use the building in October and – that’s the bonus – we will also be able to enrol more children. A great goal to work towards!
The construction of the sports field and the vegetable garden will follow.

Corona in Florianopolis

The corona situation in Florianopolis is comparable to that in the Netherlands, as far as we know. There are many infections but most people do not get very sick and there are relatively few hospital admissions.

However, so many people have become ill that many companies are without staff. Without staff, it is of course impossible for ASAS to continue its activities. That is why several extra measures are in place. Mouth masks are mandatory. Ventilation is provided as much as possible. And in order to keep everything running, ASAS is working hard at rostering. Furthermore, the young children are now being vaccinated

Fortunately, the schools are all reopening (or have reopened). The rules depend on the school. As far as it looks now, the one and a half metre rule will be adhered to in the dining halls everywhere, a PPF2 mask will be compulsory in February and March (look for more after that) and everyone will have to stay at home in case of complaints.

Support us on a regular basis

Any kind of support is very welcome to us. Brazil has become more expensive, we are going to grow with the construction, so we will need more financial leeway. A nice idea is to support us monthly or yearly. Because we are an ANBI foundation, there are possibilities to make it tax deductible. Want to know more?

The lucky cards are still there!

Order them now

They are back! Last year, our gift cards with Brazilian lucky ribbons were a resounding success. Within 3 months, our entire stock was sold out. And rightly so: because what is nicer to give than a gift that makes someone in the Netherlands and in Brazil happier?

The idea is simple: we have cards with 1, 2 or 3 lucky ribbons (for € 15, € 25 or € 50). You give such a card to yourself or someone else. The proceeds will go entirely to the projects of Power2Fly and thus… to children in Brazil who desperately need our help.

There is literally and figuratively a wonderful Brazilian story attached to the cards: tie a band around someone’s wrist, let that person make a wish and when the band falls off, the wish is fulfilled. Feel free to order more than one: then you can pass on a whole lot of happiness.
