The major consequences of COVID-21

Brazil suffered enormously from the corona crisis, perhaps even more than many other countries. But what exactly did that mean for ‘our people’ in Florianopolis? In this newsletter we tell you more about it.

To give you an idea: buses did not run, people did not come to work, cleaning ladies had to stay at home for fear of contamination, children could not go to school and so on. Life stood still. And… no work means no money. The worries were great.

Fortunately, in cooperation with ASAS we were able to deliver several emergency packages. The last few months this was possible thanks to a nice donation from the Hilltree foundation. This allowed us to give the people gas for cooking. We also provided educational material for the children and, of course, food and cleaning products.

ASAS pays extra attention to the most vulnerable children

ASAS has been busy these past months keeping in touch with the children as much as possible and arranging (new) emergency kits. In addition, the entire team – under the guidance of an external organization – is working on a document that explains how they can best deal with vulnerable children. A large donor had demanded this, a nice extra step towards the further professionalization of the foundation. The document describes what to do if abuse is spotted, what teachers can and cannot do, and how to deal with anonymous reports. In short, a complete and comprehensive document that is used as a guide and protects children and teachers.

Since September 20, ASAS has also been allowed to reopen in a limited capacity. The coordinator, together with the social worker, investigated which children are most vulnerable so that they could be the first to return.

Will the construction really start?

After two years of pushing, talking, nagging and dreaming, the end is – finally – in sight. Or perhaps better: the beginning. Because soon the construction can really start! The permits have been obtained. We are still waiting for the last signature.

Time and again, the municipality asked for all kinds of things: adjustments, a biologist to map the trees, a new drawing for the drainage and parking spaces in the right place. Now we just have to wait and see who in the municipality is going to sign and then we can really get going. The first job will be to clean up the ground. This will be done by Comcap, the local waste collection service. From the pictures below you can see how badly that is needed. Hopefully we will be able to show you different pictures in the next newsletter!

ASAS on local television

The local television also supports ASAS and our struggle to start building. Below you can see interviews with people from the neighbourhood:

Support us on a regular basis

Any kind of support is very welcome to us. Brazil has become more expensive. With the construction the number of children we can support is growing, so we will need more financial leeway. A nice idea is to support us monthly or yearly. Because we are an ANBI foundation, there are possibilities to make it tax deductible. Want to know more?

The lucky cards are still for sale!

Order them now

They are back! Last year, our gift cards with Brazilian lucky ribbons were a resounding success. Within 3 months, our entire stock was sold out. And rightly so: because what is nicer to give than a gift that makes someone in the Netherlands and in Brazil happier?

The idea is simple: we have cards with 1, 2 or 3 lucky ribbons (for €15, €25 or €50). You give such a card to yourself or someone else. The proceeds will go entirely to the projects of Power2Fly and thus… to children in Brazil who desperately need our help.

There is literally and figuratively a beautiful Brazilian story attached to the cards: tie a band around someone’s wrist, let that person make a wish and when the band falls off, the wish is fulfilled. Feel free to order more than one: then you can pass on a whole lot of happiness.
